How it works

Pitch to degrees: angle = arctan(pitch ÷ 12)
Degrees to pitch: pitch = tan(angle) × 12
Slope factor = √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)

Worked example

Converting a 6/12 pitch:

Convert: Pitch (x in 12) to degrees
Pitch: rise per 12 in: 6 in

The calculator gives:

Angle: 26.57°
Slope percentage: 50.0%
Slope factor: 1.1180

arctan(6 ÷ 12) = arctan(0.5) = 26.57°. Going the other way, 30° is tan(30°) × 12 = 6.93, just under a 7/12 pitch.

A 12/12 roof is 45°. Beyond that the pitch number grows fast: 24/12 is 63.4°.
