How it works
- Drywall area = 2 × (length + width) × wall height, + length × width if you are doing the ceiling
- Compound = area ÷ 1,000 × gallons per 1,000 sq ft (USG gives about 10 gal for its conventional all-purpose ready-mix)
- Pails = gallons ÷ pail size, rounded up
- Tape = area ÷ 1,000 × 370 ft (USG/CGC paper tape data sheet)
Worked example
A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls, ceiling included:
- Measure by: Room size
- Room length: 12 ft
- Room width: 12 ft
- Wall height: 8 ft
- Include the ceiling: Yes
- Compound per 1,000 sq ft: 10 gal
- Pail size: 4.5 gal
The calculator gives:
- Joint compound: 5.3 gal = 2 pails (4.5 gal)
- Paper joint tape: 195 ft (about 1 × 250 ft rolls)
- Drywall area: 528 sq ft
The walls are 384 sq ft and the ceiling 144 sq ft, 528 sq ft in all. At 10 gal per 1,000 sq ft that is 5.3 gal, two 4.5 gal pails, plus about 195 ft of tape.
Material and waste notes
- Coverage figures assume the usual taping, filling and finishing coats. Skim coating a whole wall, heavy texture or a Level 5 finish uses much more.
- Lightweight and setting-type compounds cover differently. Use the coverage on your product's label in the "compound per 1,000 sq ft" box.
- Doors and windows are not deducted; the extra corners and edges around them use compound anyway.
- Pail sizes vary by brand and product; check the label.
