Using Cinzel for monograms

Cinzel is based on Roman inscriptional capitals, which makes it the natural font for a formal single initial in a laurel wreath and for two-letter monograms on stationery. It is also the default text font for names and dates in the tool.

Serif capitals are the classic choice for two-letter monograms in a double circle, split monograms with a family name, and a single initial in a laurel wreath. They read as formal without being fussy. Serifs cut well from about 1.5 to 2 inches; the thin hairline serifs on Bodoni-style faces are the only fragile part. For embroidery, serif capitals digitise as satin stitch from 1 inch.

For the name in a split monogram or the date under a wedding monogram, pair Cinzel with Montserrat; the tool’s “Text font” control sets it.

Licence and download

Cinzel (weight 700) is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits commercial use, embedding and redistribution as long as the font itself is not sold on its own. Download the font from Google Fonts (source: google/fonts on GitHub). Our tool loads the same file from Google’s servers and converts the letters to outlines, so nothing needs installing.
