A single initial monogram is one letter, usually the surname initial, often inside a wreath, circle or square. It is the simplest and most versatile monogram: it works for an individual, a couple or a whole family, it reads at any size, and it is the standard for door wreaths, doormats, pillows, glassware and wax seals. Which initial. For a household it is the surname initial. For a personal item (a tumbler, a pencil case, a makeup bag) it is normally the first initial. When in doubt, the surname initial is never wrong on anything for the home.
Fonts and frames. Roman capitals (Cinzel, Cinzel Decorative) inside a laurel wreath are the formal, classical version. A heavy serif (Abril Fatface, Bodoni Moda) in a circle is the farmhouse-sign version. A script capital (Great Vibes, Herr Von Muellerhoff) with the vine flourish is the wedding version. A blackletter capital (UnifrakturMaguntia) with no frame is the Old English version. Bubble fonts in a dotted circle suit children’s items.
Sizing. A single letter is the easiest monogram to cut small: 1 inch in adhesive vinyl for a heavy font, 2 inches for a script. The laurel and vine frames have leaves about 0.4 inch long at a 6 inch monogram, so keep framed versions at 4 inches or more for vinyl. On a doormat stencil, 10 to 12 inches. On a pillow, 8 to 10 inches. For embroidery, a single initial on a towel is 3 to 4 inches, on a napkin 1 to 1.5 inches, on a shirt cuff 0.5 inch.
