A split monogram (also called a split letter or a family-name monogram) is one large initial with a horizontal band cut through its middle and a name set inside the band. It is the standard design for door hangers, wooden signs, wedding welcome boards, and the front of a farmhouse-style tumbler. Which initial to use. A split monogram almost always uses the surname initial, because the band carries the family name: a large M with “Miller” through it. For a first name on a child’s door use the first initial with the first name. For a couple you can put both first names in the band (“Anna and Ben”) under the surname initial.
Fonts. The letter needs weight so the two halves stay substantial: serif faces with heavy stems (Playfair Display, Abril Fatface, Bodoni Moda) and heavy sans faces (Montserrat, Bungee) all work. Script letters split badly because the band removes the thin strokes that hold them together. The name in the band is set in a separate text font; a spaced sans (Montserrat) or classic capitals (Cinzel) reads best at small sizes, and you can switch it with the “Text font” control.
Sizing. On a Cricut, the band text is the limiting detail. At a 6 inch letter the name is about 0.5 inch tall and cuts well from adhesive vinyl; at 3 inches the name drops to 0.25 inch and letters like “e” and “a” start to lose their counters, so for tumblers keep the name short or choose Bebas Neue for the band. For a wooden door hanger paint the letter through a stencil cut from the SVG at 12 to 18 inches. For embroidery, a split monogram works from 3 inches up; the band lines are best converted to a satin stitch.

Frequently asked questions
Is the split monogram SVG actually cut, or is the band a white box?
It is actually cut. The letter is converted to a polygon and the band is subtracted from it, so the SVG contains the top and bottom halves as separate closed shapes. There is no mask or white rectangle to remove.
Which letter goes in a split monogram?
The surname initial, with the family name in the band. For a child’s room use the first initial and first name.
How long can the name be?
Up to 24 characters. Long names are scaled to fit the band, so at small sizes a long name becomes hard to cut; keep it under about 10 letters for anything under 4 inches wide.
Can I change the font of the name separately from the letter?
Yes. The “Text font” control sets the band text (Cinzel, Montserrat, Playfair Display or Bebas Neue) independently of the letter font.
What size should a split monogram be for a door hanger?
Most round wooden door hangers are 18 to 24 inches, and the letter usually fills 12 to 16 inches of that. Set the size in inches before you download and the SVG carries that size into Design Space.
