An Old English monogram uses a blackletter (gothic, Fraktur or textura) capital, the lettering style of medieval manuscripts, newspaper mastheads and traditional tattoo work. A single blackletter initial is the usual form, because the capitals are so ornate that two or three of them side by side become hard to read. This free Old English monogram maker offers four open-licensed blackletter fonts: UnifrakturMaguntia (a faithful Fraktur), UnifrakturCook (bolder), Pirata One (a modern tattoo-style gothic) and Grenze Gotisch (a more legible hybrid). Which initial. A single Old English initial is normally the surname initial. For a two-letter version (first and last) use the two-letter style with Grenze Gotisch, which stays readable side by side. Three-letter Old English monograms are rare and best avoided.
Style notes. Blackletter capitals have thin hairline flourishes, so a plain square frame or no frame at all suits them better than a busy wreath. Black on a light background is traditional; deep red and metallic gold are the classic alternatives. Check the letter before you cut: Fraktur capitals such as I and J, or V and W, look alike to people who do not read blackletter daily.
Sizing. The hairlines are the constraint. For adhesive vinyl keep a single Old English initial at 3 inches or more; UnifrakturCook and Pirata One are heavier and manage 2 inches. For heat-transfer vinyl on the back of a jacket, 8 to 10 inches. For a car window decal, 4 to 6 inches. For embroidery, blackletter digitises well as satin stitch at 2.5 inches and up; the thin ornaments should be dropped or converted to running stitch below that.
