A script monogram sets the initials in a calligraphic or brush font with a larger surname initial in the centre and no frame, which is the look on most modern wedding gifts, tote bags, makeup bags and cake toppers. Etiquette. With a larger centre letter, the order is first-name initial, surname initial, middle-name initial. If you switch the letter order to “As typed” so all three read in name order, make the letters the same size by choosing the two-letter or single-initial style instead, because a larger centre letter is understood to be the surname.

Choosing a script. Copperplate scripts (Great Vibes, Pinyon Script, Herr Von Muellerhoff) have the biggest capitals and the thinnest hairlines: elegant, but the hardest to cut. Sizing. Thin hairlines set the minimum. Copperplates need 4 inches or more in adhesive vinyl and 5 inches in heat-transfer vinyl; brush and monoline scripts manage 2.5 to 3 inches. On a tumbler a script monogram is usually 3 to 3.5 inches wide. For embroidery, satin-stitch scripts work at 2.5 inches and up; a 3.5 inch script monogram is the standard for a bath towel.
